Birthday Wishes for a Granddaughter

A birthday card is a chance to tell your granddaughter what you like about her, in your own words. Mention something she's into, or a day you spent together. These wishes are a starting point. Change anything that doesn't sound like you.

By age

First birthday: Write down a detail you'd otherwise forget, like the clapping game she wouldn't stop playing. She'll care about that later far more than any guess about who she'll grow up to be.

Childhood: Meet her where she is. Mention the book she keeps telling you about, or the zoo trip she's been counting down to.

16th birthday: Write about her opinions, her sense of humor, the things she's gotten braver about. If you mention her looks at all, keep it brief.

18th birthday: Congratulate her, then reassure her. She can take her time figuring out what she wants, and she can ask for help.

21st birthday and later: Don't measure her life against anyone else's timeline. Friends, a new skill, a good apartment: all of it belongs in a birthday card.

Written from grandma / grandpa

From Grandma: Use something from your own relationship instead of assuming you like the same things. Tell her what she's taught you lately, even if it's how to use the TV remote.

From Grandpa: A plain "I love you" belongs in the card as much as a funny memory does. If you add a joke, make it one she'll laugh at too.

From both: Write about what she brings to your time together, and sign with the names she calls you both. Each of you can add a line if you'd like.
