Say it beautifully.
Wedding Wishes for a Granddaughter
Tell your granddaughter how happy you are for her, and bring her husband into the card from the first line. A wedding card only needs a few honest sentences. Pick a wish that fits, then add their names or a memory.
By stage
At the engagement: Congratulate them both and let them share plans in their own time. If you offer to help, mean it with no strings attached.
During the preparations: Send encouragement, not opinions nobody asked for. A short note reminds them you'll be delighted whatever color the napkins turn out to be.
On the wedding day: Write to your granddaughter and her husband as a couple. A childhood story is lovely, as long as it doesn't take over the card.
After the celebration: Mention a moment you enjoyed, like the first dance or the toast that made everyone laugh. If you missed the day, keep the card about their happiness, not your apology.
Written from grandma / grandpa
From Grandma: It's fine to say the day made you emotional. Just don't suggest marriage completes her. Use her husband's name and welcome him properly.
From Grandpa: Say simply that you love her and you're happy for them. Skip the "giving her away" jokes and the mock warnings to her husband.
From both: Write one message together and sign with the names she calls you. On the envelope, use the names the couple prefers rather than assuming a surname change. Questions about babies can wait.

My dear granddaughter and [partner's name], I've waited a long time to see you this happy. All my love today.
I remember [our Saturday walks to the bakery], when you never ran out of things to say. I hope you two never do, especially over breakfast.
[Partner's name], welcome. Grandpa's glad to have someone new to argue [baseball] with. Congratulations to you both.
Grandma has been smiling about your wedding all week. The neighbors have started asking why.
Tell each other about the small stuff before it grows. That's my best advice after [number] years married.
Congratulations on your engagement! Plenty of time for plans later. Right now we're just thrilled.
Make a home where neither of you has to pretend you had a good day. Love, your grandparents.
I watched you look for each other across the room all night. Keep doing that, even at parties where you know everyone.
Grandpa's wish: kindnesses nobody else ever sees.
Get some sleep tonight. The day doesn't have to be perfect for us to love it.
To my granddaughter and her husband: I want to hear about the traditions you two make up. Save me a story.
I can't make the ceremony, so I'll be raising my teacup at home at [time] sharp.
Congratulations, newlyweds. I hope your first quiet night in after all this feels like a vacation.
You two got through [a shared challenge] together. After that, a wedding is the easy part.
One tip from Grandma: take photos of ordinary days too. Takeout on the couch belongs in the album.
Keep your own hobbies. That way there's something new to tell each other at dinner.
My favorite part of the whole day was hearing your vows.
The card's late. Grandpa's good wishes were on time. Send pictures.
Dear [names], long after the flowers wilt, I hope you remember how many people showed up for you.
You were the bossiest flower girl at [your aunt's] wedding. Look at you now, running the show again.
